The VolkerWessels construction firm, together with its partner Global Marine Systems Ltd., signed a contract with London Array Ltd. for the installation of cables for the London Array offshore windmill park in England. The contract is valued at over € 122 million, of which over half will be for the account of VolkerWessels.
The cables for the London Array offshore windmill park will be laid at a depth of 10 to approx. 23 metres off the coast of the British Kent and Essex counties (East England). The VolkerWessels subsidiary Visser & Smit Marine Contracting (VSMC) will install four export cables of over 50 kilometres and will look after the assembly of 187 cables that run between the windmills. In addition, the company will focus on the onshore cabling and will provide the connection between land and water by using four horizontal drillings (a technique used for the construction of underground infrastructure without the use of trenches).
VolkerWessels is collaborating via VSMC on the first phase of this project involving the installation of a 630 MW capacity. The second phase comprises an additional 370 MW of production. In this way, London Array contributes to a significant degree to the British government's objective of acquiring a major portion of its power requirements from renewable sources by 2015 or thereabouts.
