The commitment to environmentally sustainable working practices shown by VolkerHighways on their projects across the country has been rewarded after they won a Green Apple Environment Award. The international campaign, started in 1984 by The Green Organisation, a non-profit group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world aims to find the greenest companies, councils and communities.
One of the projects that led to the recognition for VolkerHighways was a trial of recycled materials used in the resurfacing of a resident street in the London Borough of Camden. The material used was made of up to 70% recycled material compared to traditional materials which are up to 100% newly manufactured. The new process, which provides a cost effective surfacing solution, also reduced the amount of CO2 used during the trial by 1.1 tonnes.
The Green Apple Awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
