VolkerBrooks has successfully fabricated and delivered 190 tonnes of twin Rectangular Hollow Section (RHS) wailings, to assist with the extension of berth 9 at the Port of Felixstowe. To help provide structural support to the port’s newly piled quay wall, the steel fabrication team prepped and butt welded 66 50mm thick end plates onto 33 sets of box sections, to form the walings.
Delivered to site six weeks ahead of the scheduled installation date, the RHS wailings were installed by main contractor VSBW. VSBW is a joint venture between VolkerStevin and Boskalis Westminster. As the lead contractor VSBW is currently extending berth 9 by 190 metres. This new extension will proivde the port even greater flexibility to berth the world's largest container ships.
The Port of Felixstowe is Britain’s biggest and busiest container port, and one of the largest in Europe, handling more than 3.7million units and welcoming over 3,000 ships each year.
