Amsterdam, the Netherlands, July 21, 2011 - Today it became clear that VIA NZL, a combination of contractor Visser & Smit Bouw bv and technical services providor Imtech Building Services bv, was given the assignment to finalize the construction of the Noord/Zuidlijn metro line by the Department Noord/Zuidlijn of the City of Amsterdam. This assignment, with an approximate size of 270 miljoen Euro, marks an important step on the way to final commissioning of the Noord/Zuidlijn metro line connection.
Imtech Building Services bv and Visser & Smit Bouw (a subsidiary of VolkerWessels) will work on the project with Imtech Infra bv and VolkerWessels-subsidiaries VolkerRail Nederland bv and BKB Infra vof. ARCADIS Nederland bv will play an important role in the area of engineering and systems integration.
The new Noord/Zuidlijn (North/South) in Amsterdam is a new metro line with a length of 9.7 kilometers and eight stations. The metro line starts above ground in Amsterdam-Noord and then runs 7.1 kilometers at a subterranean level under the center to the existing above ground train and metro station Zuid.
Finalization of the Noord/Zuidlijn: last stage before final commissioning
The finalization of Noord/Zuidlijn, focusing on transportation technology and construction detailing, was the last large contract to be tendered in the project. The contract will encompass the realisation of the rail and track systems and related technical installations along the line as well as finalisation of all metro stations. This includes installations such as escalators and elevators, lighting, and several other installations.
Start of the work
Work is planned to start in spring 2012. In the preceding period, the design, works preparation and procurement will be executed by VIA NZL. At the end of 2015 the final construction is to be completed and - after a period of testing and test driving - the Noord/Zuidlijn is expected to be commissioned in 2017.
